The Garden is not a public park, but is privately managed by volunteers as a community garden and an environmental space. It is the last surviving of the seven original Covent Garden community gardens. The Phoenix Garden is a registered charity (formerly Covent Garden Open Spaces Association).

The land is leased from the London Borough of Camden for a 'peppercorn' rent and the garden was created on the site of a car park and opened in July 1984.

The current lease expires in 2009 and we are presently in negotiations with our landlords to extend this into the future.

The garden is one of the few green spaces in the area and not only provides people with peaceful retreat from the city, but also essential habitat for urban wildlife.

We garden using environmentally friendly and sustainable practices - recycling all our green waste onsite, growing the 'right' plants for the conditions, building insect friendly log stacks and rubble heaps - and is designed to feel like a patch of countryside dropped into the centre of town.

We feed the birds year round and are visited regularly by range of species.

The garden is home to a population of frogs and the pond is a magnet in springtime for parents and children who love the West End's only frogs.

The garden has featured in:

Time Out magazines 'Top 5 Secret Places To Eat Sandwiches'.
The Telegraph newspaper gardening pages.

The Phoenix Garden has been awarded First Prize in the Best Environmental Garden category in the Camden in Bloom Competition in 2004 - 2005 - 2006 - 2007.

In summer the garden is busy with workers escaping from the office for a bit of peace and quiet.
